What Travel Vaccines Do You Need for South America? 🌎
Dreaming of a trip to South America? From the Amazon rainforest to Machu Picchu, Rio Carnival to Patagonia, this vibrant continent offers once-in-a-lifetime experiences—but it also comes with important health precautions. At Stevenage Travel Clinic, we’re here to make sure you stay protected with the right vaccines and travel advice before you go.
Yellow Fever 🦟
Yellow Fever is one of the most important vaccines to consider when travelling to South America. It's required or recommended in many countries including:
Brazil
Bolivia
Colombia
Ecuador (especially Amazon regions)
French Guiana
Peru
Venezuela
Some countries will ask for proof of Yellow Fever vaccination as a condition of entry. We are a registered Yellow Fever vaccination centre, and we’ll provide you with an official International Certificate of Vaccination.
Hepatitis A & B
Hepatitis A is spread through contaminated food and water and is recommended for all travellers to South America.
Hepatitis B is spread through blood and bodily fluids, and is recommended if you may have medical procedures abroad or plan to travel long-term or off the beaten path.
Typhoid
Typhoid is also spread via contaminated food and water and is recommended for most travellers, particularly if you’ll be staying in rural areas or with locals.
Rabies 🐾
Rabies is present throughout South America. If you’re planning outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, caving, or if you’ll be spending time around animals, a rabies vaccine is highly recommended. Access to treatment may be limited in remote areas.
Tetanus, Diphtheria & Polio (Td/IPV)
Ensure you are up to date with your tetanus booster (every 10 years) and routine vaccinations including diphtheria and polio.
Malaria Prevention
While there’s no vaccine for malaria, many parts of South America have a risk of transmission, especially in jungle and rural areas (e.g. parts of Brazil, Peru, Guyana). We can advise on antimalarial tablets based on your itinerary.
