What Travel Vaccines Do You Need for Africa? 🌍
Africa is an incredible destination—whether you're heading on safari in Kenya, hiking in Uganda, exploring the markets of Ghana, or visiting family abroad. But with unique health risks across the continent, getting the right travel vaccines is essential for a safe and stress-free trip.
At Stevenage Travel Clinic, we provide expert travel health advice and vaccinations tailored to your journey.
Yellow Fever 🟡
Yellow Fever is one of the most important vaccines for Africa. It’s a serious mosquito-borne illness and is required for entry into several countries, especially if you’re coming from or transiting through a country where Yellow Fever is present.
Countries where Yellow Fever vaccination may be required or strongly recommended include:
Kenya
Uganda
Ghana
Nigeria
Ethiopia
Democratic Republic of Congo
Rwanda
Angola
Sierra Leone
Côte d’Ivoire
We are a registered Yellow Fever vaccination centre and will issue your official Yellow Fever certificate, valid for life.
Hepatitis A & B
Hepatitis A: Spread through food and water. Recommended for all travellers to Africa.
Hepatitis B: Spread through blood and bodily fluids. Recommended for longer stays, medical procedures abroad, or high-risk activities.
Typhoid
Typhoid is present across much of Africa and is spread through contaminated food and water. Highly recommended, especially for rural travel, homestays, or adventurous eaters.
Tetanus, Diphtheria & Polio (Td/IPV)
Make sure your boosters are up to date—especially tetanus, which is a risk in areas where you might get cuts or scrapes.
Rabies 🐾
Rabies is still a concern across many African countries. It's spread by dog, bat, and monkey bites or scratches. Consider the rabies vaccine if you’ll be in remote areas, on safari, volunteering, or spending time around animals.
Cholera (oral vaccine)
While not routinely needed for all travellers, cholera vaccination may be recommended for those heading to outbreak areas, aid workers, or those with limited access to clean water.
Malaria Prevention 🦟
Malaria is a risk in nearly all of sub-Saharan Africa. While there’s no vaccine (except in some pilot programmes), antimalarial tablets are essential. We’ll help you choose the right one based on your destination and medical history.
